James first appears in the will and issue settlements of his father Thomas Anderson in 1711 in Charles City, Virginia. After he married Mary Jordon, James sold his own acreage further south along the Nottoway River and moved to this plantation about 1719 and came to call it "Arnols" estate.
James was involved in developing lands and adding to his holdings. His will indicates a sizeable estate, and he provided money, lands, personal belongings and slaves to his widow and children.Described himself as "of Prince George County" when he sold to Joshua Meachem of Surry County, for a consideration of 4 L., 104 acres in Surry near the Nottoway River adjoining the land of Daniel Eppes. (Surry Book 1715 - 1730, p. 127)
On 14 February, 1719, James Anderson, then described as "of the County of Surry," sold to Cornelius Cargill 105 acres on Cattail Swamp in Prince George, adjoining land of Charles Anderson and unpatented lands. (Prince George Great Book, p. 292). In the same year, he sold other tracts in Prince George.
In 1749, James Anderson, then called "senior," of Surry County, deeded to John Anderson of Amelia, consideration of 1 shilling, 200 acres on the south side of Little Nottoway River, adjoining Samuel Jordan.
